Breaking Bread and Barriers

December 8th at 7:00 pm

Lost Origins Gallery 3110 Mt Pleasant St NW, Washington, DC 20010

Join the Global Center for Refugee Education and Science in partnership with the Lost Origins Gallery for an evening filled with refugee homeland cuisine and an exhibition of 1,001 Syrian Nights. Ticket proceeds go towards providing intensive language training for our refugee neighbors.

We will enjoy cuisine from the homelands of refugees, a personal explanation of the 1,001 Syrian Nights exhibit, and stories from local refugees.

The 1,001 Syrian Nights exhibition is of previously unpublished works from photographer Jason Hamacher’s personal archive of pre-war Syria photographs. Hamacher has chosen sixteen large-format panoramic images to showcase Aleppo’s skyline before it was heavily damaged and the city’s beauty after dark. Hamacher’s entire archive was recently acquired by The Library of Congress for its permanent collection. 1,001 Syrian Nights is printed with pigmented inks on a mold base cotton paper traditionally held as the oldest and most renowned paper in Europe. Hamacher aims to confront the audience with simultaneous visions of grandeur and resilience, not just the destruction so commonly associated with Syria.
